Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flow charts, it is about how we influence one another.
We all have strengths and weaknesses and our strengths usually dominate what we choose to focus on and these strengths get better over time. They say it takes 10,000,00 hours to really master something. I feel at this point in my life, I have mastered being a wonderful teacher, workshop and program leader, curriculum developer, and life coach. All these skills support each other and I have hours and hours and years of practice. I feel completely confident in these roles and at this point they feel somewhat effortless, hallelujah! However, what I am still mastering and learning is writing and leading and co-collaborating with teams. These skills are somewhat natural to me, but they also require more attention and discipline. They are still new and not as easy as the ones I mentioned above. I must practice and dedicate time and patience to learning them so it becomes easier. I am committed to growing these qualities in myself professionally because I know that by leaning into both of these new roles, writer/author and team leader/collaborator my life will align with what I truly want. These are some of the ways I lead in my professional life. My personal life has a lot of other dimensions that I recognize I take the lead in, but can also take a passive role.
Where do you lead personally and professionally? The answer to this will normally become apparent when you think of what you do naturally, have an affinity for, and have mastered like my example above. Take a few minutes to answer the following questions.
1) What comes naturally to you in your professional life? Are you detail oriented, the big picture person, or do you excel in working with numbers or with people?
2) What comes naturally to you in your personal life? Are you patient, a nurturer, a planner, or go with the flow, etc.
We are all leaders and many of us are leaning into our edges because lets face it, life is always changing and so must we.
How are you leaning in?
- You may be managing teams at work
- Leading as a mother, father, as a spouse
- Leading the care taking as your parents get sick and need more support.
- Leading in a group or cause that really inspires you like climate change, the homeless, local farming, children with leukemia, etc.
- Leading by merely sharing what others are too scared to say, but needs to be said.
Everyone that I come in contact with, seems to be juggling too many things and as a result are not fully aligned with what they really want. They have gotten on the treadmill of life and don’t know how to slow it down and choose a more satisfying path.
I am committed to you and serving you to re-align with what really matters to you.
Love,
Carley
